EEG Brainwave Training: An Alternative To Using Medications For Add

Statistics show that 15% of the population has Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). An ADD child shows symptoms of inattention and impulsiveness and may be hyperactive. This directly affects his ability to perform in the classroom. Many parents are concerned but do not want to mediate their children for this disorder. How EEG Brainwave Training Works

Developed around 1980, EEG Brainwave Training is a painless neurofeedback procedure that has been proven to be successful. Children who have ADD are in an under arousal condition. This is why many children who have ADD take stimulant medication. EEG Brainwave Training uses neurofeedback techniques to train the child to switch from under arousal frequency bands to frequency bands that are more acceptable. EEG Brainwave Training challenges the brain to maintain a high performance, alert and attentive state. Gradually, the brain learns to maintain this state just like it learns anything else. It is literally retrained.

The EEG Brainwave Training Procedure

During the procedure, sensors are placed on the scalp and ears. It is safe and painless. NO electrical impulses are sent into the child. They are instead detected on the surface of the scalp and monitored by an instrument that processes the signal and provides the proper feedback. This is displayed to the child by means of a video game or other video display, along with audio signals. The child is asked to make the game go faster using only his brain. Gradually the brain responds to the cues being given, and it 'learns' new brainwave patterns. The new pattern is closer to what is normally observed in children without ADD.

The advantage of EEG Brainwave Training is that the results are learned and usually permanent compared to medication which is only effective as long as the child is taking the medication. If a child is already on medication, EEG Brainwave Training may enable the child to gradually eliminate the need for the medication.
